And while it can be fun to update a room with whatever the newest thing is, if you're remodeling your home or looking for something you want to keep in the long term, it can be a challenge to know what to get. After all, you don't want to invest in something for your home only to have it look dated next year. Here are five current trends that interior designers predict will be timeless.   Bold and Vibrant Colors According to interior designer Jennifer Hunter, the vibrant colors we are currently seeing are here for the long haul. "I am currently designing lots of spaces with full gloss colorful walls. Think hues of plum, wine, and indigo," she tells me. Interior designer Kate Dawson is on the same page. "For years we've focused on neutral, clean looks—and that is absolutely beautiful and luxurious, but people want to make a statement now. Of all the trends coming this year, I think that bold colors are the thing that is going to have the most staying power," she explains. "People are tired of everything looking the same. How many neighbors do you know who have white kitchens?" So if you're considering using bold paint or a bright-colored textile, don't be afraid to go with it. You probably won't regret it in the future. Unique and One-of-a-Kind Items Perhaps everyone who laughed at those "Live. Laugh. Love" signs was right. They're a flash in the pan. Dawson tells me unique pieces are far more timeless than mass-produced decor. "Anytime something starts to look mass-produced, it loses its design impact." The more unique, old, and interesting, the better. However, this doesn't means you need an expensive antique. An old family heirloom or something you find at a flea market does the trick. "An example of this would be reviving your great-grandmother's vase or table lamp that was showcased in her old Parisian home back in the '50s. These pieces give a space personality and make you look worldly, aside from stylish," says interior designer Tova Kook. Quiet Luxury Quiet luxury was one of the biggest microtrends on TikTok in 2023. This aesthetic has evolved to become a macrotrend and is on the road to being a timeless aesthetic.  "The quiet luxury trend ticks all the boxes when it comes to foundational principles for creating a timeless home. Think of it like a capsule wardrobe: invest in the essentials such as good lighting, scale, craftsmanship, and functionality and let the layers fall into place over time—even incorporating the occasional trendy trinket," says HGTV star and interior designer Shay Holland.  If you're looking to incorporate this trend into your home, Holland recommends choosing natural materials "Materials like solid wood and wool can endure years of heavy use, unlike easily chipped laminates and synthetic fabrics that fray and pill."   Dark Countertops While lighter countertops made of marble and quartz were on trend for years, we've now opened the door to darker stones with bold and contrasting veining. But this isn't just another trend—it's something that will look chic for decades. According to interior designer Ryann Swan, "Stunning natural stone has been used in interiors for long enough that I don't think we should consider this a trend. Think Greek and Roman architecture, think Versailles! We are finding ourselves evolving our application of marble, softer edge profiles, more radiused details, really pushing ourselves to apply the stone in thoughtful ways so it continues to feel fresh." However, this doesn't mean that Carrara marble is over. "Just like boot cut jeans and the iconic beige trench coat have been closet classics for over 100 years, certain interior design trends will never go out of style. Carrara marble has been used in building decor since ancient times," Holland explains.   10 Types of Countertops To Consider for Your Next Kitchen or Bathroom Remodel Plaster From walls to range hoods, there are so many ways to incorporate plaster details into your home. This element, while currently on the rise, is unlikely to go out of style anytime soon reveals interior designer Alissa Johnson. By Kyle Hoepner Some design advice topics lend themselves reasonably well to a "tips and tricks" format. But when it comes to the question of reliably pulling in repeat customers, even the briefest conversation with an interiors professional makes it clear that no bullet-point list of do's and don'ts will substitute for the old-fashioned investment of time, thought, and hard work. Engaging fully as both a designer and a communicator is, in the long run, what it will take. Focus on Your Client's Experience For Los Angeles designer Jeff Andrews, each first-time job with a new client is "like a first date: there's a lot of testing the waters." It may seem obvious, but the early stages of any association have an outsize impact on its potential longevity. For this reason, Andrews says, "cultivating a relationship with a client during your first project together is always quite a task—almost as important as the design itself." "Blow [clients] away the first time, or you may not get a second chance," agrees Lorna Gross, whose Washington, DC, firm boasts an impressively high percentage of homeowners who come back for more. Gross and her team, therefore, commit to "not just executing design, but checking the pulse of the client" throughout the course of work. "Asking a simple question like 'How do you think things are going?'—and being open to the answer—allows us the opportunity to make a situation better," she continues. The goal is "to exceed the vision they had for their project," and in doing so, open the door to future collaborations. Exactly as dating can lead to marriage, a frequent first step on the road to multiple jobs is an initial assignment that then starts to expand. "Some clients will test us to see if they want to keep investing," observes Gross. "If they have two houses they want to design, they'll try us out on half of the first house to see how we support them, if they've enjoyed the experience, if we've fulfilled their aspirations." Keep Connections Green A second imperative for cultivating repeat customers is not to let contacts lapse after a project ends. Once a family is in her database, Gross will continue to send gifts or cards for birthdays and other special occasions, such as if a client gets a promotion or a child graduates from high school. "I'll take them to dinner or lunch or coffee sometimes, just to touch base, even if no project is on the horizon," she says. "It lets us stay on the top of their minds for when they are ready." As with design, a notable amount of care is required to do this well. The point is to "capture what is important to each client individually," she counsels. "If we find out that Client X is gluten-intolerant, we won't send them a typical cake. Little things like that are time-consuming, but are very, very important." Let Trust Grow Equally important is how the bond between designer and client can strengthen over time. "Clients almost always become personal friends and confidants," says Herbert Acevedo, coprincipal of Shor in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Practicing in a resort town as they do, he and his partner Kevin Miller generally work first on vacation homes—and then often find themselves brought in to do primary residences afterward. "Trust plays into that," Acevedo points out. "They know that we're capable; they know we'll listen to find out what they really want; they know we're looking out for their interests." ADVERTISEMENT According to Chicago designer Summer Thornton, once a close relationship with clients begins to blossom, it will likely encompass far more than design alone. "We become creative directors for many facets of their life," she explains, "overseeing functions well beyond just the interiors. We advise on architecture or landscape or what piece of land to purchase, we create their tablescapes for holidays and gatherings, we help them as they plan weddings.... The list goes on!" Jeff Andrews's experience has been much the same: "You become the go-to person, part of the family—you're like the guru," he laughs. Weigh the Pros and Cons In addition to the obvious upside of bringing in more cash, perennial clients can also be a boon for design firms because they are known quantities—meaning a good bit of heavy lifting is already done. "You know what they like, you know their quirks, you know how they treat you and your team," Thornton says. "That's worth a lot." Just because a follow-up project is offered, though, doesn't mean you should automatically jump on it. "We don't always say yes," says Shor's Miller. "The distance may be too far, or we may not know enough resources in the area where the home is located, especially for construction." Remember, too, that the initial pair-up isn't only a chance for your clients to test you; it's also your opportunity to vet them. Chemistry counts, especially over the longer term. If you have any ambivalence about people you've worked with once, the next go-round "could be a great experience or a nightmare," Andrews notes. "Do you want to spend the next 2 or 10 years with these clients?" In the final analysis, Andrews recommends not fixating overmuch on whether you will or will not become a habit your clients can't quit. "For every project, we do the best we can to make it fit the client's needs, fit our needs as designers, and end in a happy place as something that feels successful to everybody." If that level of dedication leads to something more long-term, he adds, "It's the ultimate compliment that somebody wants to have that experience with me again." We wanted to take a moment to share with you some of the ways we have been "Keeping Up With Compromise" when it comes to our best practices here at American Down & Feather.  It is no secret that we've all experienced significant delays in delivery of goods, short-shipped raw materials, and variances in quality of materials just to name a few of our industry's recent challenges. We've spent the better part of the past twelve months doing our best to stay ahead of this demand.  It has become a constant, daunting task. We spend hours on the phone working with our current suppliers to understand the "new normal" and how to best maintain our supply of raw materials, as well as sourcing new suppliers to ensure we have enough supply of materials for our customers. Not to mention dealing with ever increasing in and out freight costs!   Nevertheless, we will continue to work diligently to maintain our high-quality, soft goods products through these challenging times. We will get through this together if we work together!   As our customers, the best way you can help us would be to: a) Order well ahead of the needed installation date; at the same time as ordering the exterior fabrics if possible, and b) Try the Perfect Pillow (Throw Pillow) insert – feels like 25/75 for just a bit more cost than 10/90.   Many of you have shared your frustrations with us over this past year and we so understand the value of working together to keep our businesses going. Unfortunately, we're not out of the woods yet. In the meantime, below are some adjustments/compromises we've made to combat the challenge while still maintaining our commitment to producing high quality goods for our customers.  •    Variances in our down proof ticking.  •    Substituting gray duck down, as an alternative to white, works just as well in down and feather blend throw pillow and cushion inserts. •    Adjusted sizes for stock comforters so we can meet demand. If you asked a classroom of kids what their favorite activity was, it's not likely any of them would select "clean up time" as their top choice. However for Denver native Molly Reinhardt, rearranging her room was a childhood "go-to." She can still remember her favorite chore, vacuuming, for the result of instant improvement. From a young age, she understood the importance of aesthetics - even as a poor college undergrad, Molly still saved $5 a week for the BART station flower vendors in San Francisco. "No matter the price, aesthetics soothe the mind," she said. She worked at high-end showroom Waterworks for about ten years after college, donning an $11 outfit while serving the 1% of the 1% for remodels and new-build construction. She'd always been a Goodwill shopper and dumpster diver with a knack for turning trash into treasure. Reinhardt's subsequent work with LIMN, DUXIANA, and Materials Marketing out of Texas were followed by a 2019 partnership called MCPillows, which Reinhardt left in 2020 to start Studio M Denver. Since then, Studio M has rapidly made a name for itself as Denver's source of home interior style. The company's studio houses several collections, from black and white themes to aqua shades and mountain-inspired sets of repurposed designer pillows. The fabric is often found in limited amounts, so many of these pillows feature different materials and textures on either side. This makes for some interesting two-toned and four-toned designs that can be flipped over at any time for a fresh appeal.  A large portion of Reinhardt's material repertoire is memo samples, which are typically thrown away by designers due to the metal grommets which discourage commercial use. As a solution, Studio M cuts around these grommels and stitches separate fabrics together to make up for the lost area. Reinhardt also sources "flags" from designer centers, which can provide up to nine feet of material and are used to make "grounder pillows."  Since the material is so large, these products are wrapped in one single fabric rather than a combination stitch. Reinhardt now gets the bulk of her design materials from friends and past colleagues rather than daily dumpster diving, thanks to the extensive network of designers she's built over the years. Our down is ethically harvested, triple washed, and then sanitized at our factory. We tumble it for several hours to produce a lovely mixture of soft and lofty fill. Ideal for high quality bedding and decorative purposes. Feathers: We use only 2-4 cm soft feathers. The feathers are ethically harvested, washed, steam cleaned, and sanitized at our factory. These feathers have a nice curl, small quills, and a small percentage of down-like quality fibers. Ideal for throw pillows and seat cushions. Down & Feather Blends: We custom blend and sanitize our down and feather at our factory. Typical blends include: Soft feather (5% down, 95% feather), 10% down/ 90% feather, 25% down/75% feather, 50% feather/50% down, 80% down/20% feather. Our down/feather blends are meticulously combined to ensure a uniform mix and exceptional loft. We then tumble each blend for hours to ensure a consistent, high quality product.  10% down and 90% feather is ideal for throw pillows, seat cushions and backs.  25% down and 75% feather is ideal for high quality throw pillows, seat cushions and backs, as well as envelopes.  50% down and 50% feather is well suited for sleep products such as pillows, duvet inserts, feather beds, and mattress toppers. 80% down and 20% feather is ideal for luxurious sleep products including pillows, duvet inserts, feather beds, and mattress toppers. Fiber: We process our fiber fills in the factory to produce an exceptionally light and "lofty" feel. Our fiber filled pillows feel smooth and soft and evenly filled. Poly Green is also down alternative, hypoallergenic and resists mildew. Our Poly Green inserts are an outdoor product, covered with our Accord cover. Machine Washing Down and Feather: Machine Wash in hot water with small amount of mild detergent in a Normal or Gentle cycle. Tumble Dry on high heat for two cycles with a couple of clean tennis balls to enhance the fluffing. Let pillows cool completely between cycles.  Machine Washing Polyester Fibers: Machine Wash Cold with small amount of mild detergent in Gentle cycle. Tumble Dry Low Heat for two cycles, with a couple of clean tennis balls to enhance the fluffing.
